Chapter 22

Priest was in paperwork hell. He was not a man made to handle things like this. Why did his Killian think this was the job for him? The more he looked, the more disgusted he became. The few members willing to speak to him did not tell a good story. It was bleak. The accounts were fucked. There was no way they’d made money legally. They hadn’t even been smart enough to launder it through a legitimate business—and what legitimate business they had was dismal. How had it gotten this bad? He had the prospect he met when he first got to the club, Otter, go to the local Walmart and get boxes so he could begin sorting records and accounts.

Otter, whose actual name was Otto, came back with stacks of banker’s boxes and permanent markers. Priest raised his eyebrows but was grateful for the extra help. He looked at the young man. “Thanks. That was good thinking since there isn’t so much as a pencil around here,” he joked.

Otter grinned at him and began putting the boxes together. They quietly worked and put all the boxes and their lids together.

Otter looked up at Priest. “I have an accounting degree. I figured this would be a good way to have the best control over the accounts and businesses.”

Priest blinked. “You’re an accountant?”

“I haven’t gone for my CPA yet. I plan on that in the fall.”

Priest sat back and stared at him. “What the fuck are you doing with this bunch?”

Otter shrugged. “I didn’t have anywhere to go once I got out of the service. I completed my degree through community college and then finished at UNC. They took me in when I had nowhere to stay. It was either that or be homeless.”

Priest nodded, thinking, At least they got that right.

“What do you want to do from here? I am asking because things are not looking good for this club. I think we are going to fold it.”

Otter looked thoughtful. “Is there any opportunity to move to another chapter?”

“Depends on why and where you want to go.”

Otter looked at him. “I want to be somewhere club life is supposed to be—the way I thought it would be here. I never wanted to be part of the drug trade. I’m lucky that I came in at the tail end of it. Ranger talked me out of doing anything that might give me a record if the club got caught. He was my sponsor, never knew he was a cop. I really look up to him.”

Priest was deep in thought. They continued to go through receipts, documents, and bank statements. The only noise in the room was the rattle of paper.

“What if I sponsored you at the club in Myrtle Beach?” Priest asked thoughtfully.

Otter blinked and swallowed hard. “The mother chapter? That would be… man… I’d be honored—and to meet King… wow. Your dad started this club, didn’t he?”

“He and my uncle, yeah. It was supposed to be a place
